Trust Starts With Transparency

When it comes to your baby’s formula, we know trust isn’t given. It’s earned.

Parents deserve to know what’s in their baby’s formula, where it comes from, and how it’s tested before it reaches their family. That’s why we’re committed to sharing more about the quality and safety standards behind every can of Kendamil.

While quality testing may not be the most exciting part of infant formula, it’s one of the most important.

From ingredient intake and environmental monitoring to heavy metals testing and final product approval, safety and quality checks are built into every stage of our manufacturing process.

A closer look at our quality and safety program, built on decades of expertise.

Quality Starts With the Ingredients

We believe the best formula starts at the farm. All the creamy whole milk used as the base of each Kendamil recipe comes from European family farms, many of them run by the same families for generations, passing down a knowledge of their land and cows from one generation to the next.

Quality and care doesn’t stop there. Once that milk arrives, it’s brought to our factory in Kendal, nestled in the lush Lake District of England, where the factory has been specializing in making infant formula for generations, too. It’s this combination, generational farming care meeting generational manufacturing expertise, that’s engrained in the foundation of every batch of Kendamil we make.

Before any ingredient enters production, it goes through a rigorous approval process. Every key ingredient arrives with detailed supplier analysis and documentation, helping us verify that it meets our quality and safety requirements before it’s used in manufacturing.

We also perform our own intake checks on incoming ingredients before they enter production.

This means quality isn’t something that’s simply checked at the end of the process. It’s considered from the very beginning.

By combining supplier verification with our own quality controls, we’re able to maintain visibility into ingredients before they become part of the finished product.

Testing Happens Throughout Production

One of the biggest misconceptions about infant formula manufacturing is that products are simply tested at the end of production.

In reality, quality and safety monitoring happens throughout the manufacturing process.

Our controls include testing and monitoring at multiple stages, including:

  • Ingredient intake checks
  • In-process quality monitoring
  • Nutritional testing
  • Microbiological testing
  • Finished product testing

Each stage provides another opportunity to verify quality and identify any issues before a product progresses through the manufacturing process.

Rather than relying on a single final test, quality is continuously monitored from ingredient intake through to finished product release.

Why the Manufacturing Environment Matters

When people think about formula safety, they often think about ingredients.

But the manufacturing environment matters too.

A clean, controlled production environment plays an important role in maintaining food safety standards throughout the manufacturing process.

That’s why Kendamil operates a comprehensive environmental monitoring program designed to help maintain strict hygiene and food safety standards.

Our environmental monitoring program operates throughout manufacturing, alongside HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) controls, also known as the Food Safety Plan (FSP) in the United States, to help maintain strict hygiene and food safety standards.

Environmental monitoring takes place throughout production, helping ensure our manufacturing environment continues to meet the standards required for infant nutrition.

Our centre of excellence in Kendal holds a BRC AA rating, the highest achievable grade in the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety. This reflects the level of experience and attentiveness of our exceptional team and their ongoing commitment to the very highest levels of food safety and quality across every stage of manufacturing.

A clean, controlled environment is part of the standard from start to finish.

Heavy Metals Testing and Contaminant Monitoring

Heavy metals are another area parents increasingly ask about.

Every Kendamil product sold in the U.S. is Clean Label Project Certified, an independent, rigorous testing standard that screens for heavy metals and other contaminants to help ensure the products parents trust meet some of the strictest purity standards in the industry. Our products have received both the Clean Label Project’s ‘Purity Award’ and ‘Pesticide Free Award’ certifications.

In addition to heavy metals testing, we operate a raw material contaminant testing program that is verified on finished product.

This forms part of a broader contaminant monitoring strategy designed to help ensure products meet regulatory and internal quality standards.

Infant formula is one of the most highly regulated food categories in the world, and contaminant testing plays an important role in helping verify product safety.

Beyond Regulatory Requirements

Beyond Regulatory Requirements, All infant formula manufacturers must comply with strict regulations.

At Kendamil, we also maintain microbiological requirements that are tighter than both U.S. and European regulatory standards.

We conduct pathogen testing that exceeds regulatory requirements and perform extensive microbiological monitoring throughout production.

This approach helps provide additional assurance across our manufacturing process.

Because when you’re producing nutrition for babies, maintaining high standards matters.

More Than 2,300 Tests and Quality Checks

The process of bringing Kendamil formula from production to shelf is supported by more than 2,300 tests and quality checks.

This includes more than 750 tests conducted by external partners and accredited laboratories.

These checks include:

  • Heavy metals testing
  • Pathogen testing beyond regulatory requirements
  • Nutritional testing
  • Stability testing
  • Shelf-life testing
  • Microbiological testing
  • Physical quality assessments
  • Sensory quality evaluations
  • Continuous environmental monitoring

Together, these checks help verify both product safety and nutritional quality.

It’s important to note that these tests are not all performed on a single can. Rather, they form part of the wider manufacturing, quality, and verification process that supports every batch of formula produced.

What Is Stability Testing?

Parents often ask how manufacturers know formula will remain safe and nutritionally complete throughout its shelf life.

The answer is stability testing.

Stability testing helps verify that formula continues to meet nutritional and quality standards throughout its intended shelf life.

This testing evaluates how a product performs over time under controlled conditions.

By monitoring key quality indicators, manufacturers can help ensure the product remains consistent from production through to the end of its shelf life.

What Are Sensory and Physical Quality Assessments?

Formula quality isn’t only about safety.

It’s also about consistency.

Sensory and physical quality assessments help evaluate characteristics such as appearance, texture, aroma, and overall product quality.

These assessments help ensure products consistently meet the standards established during product development and manufacturing.

While these checks may sound simple compared to microbiological testing, they play an important role in maintaining product consistency across batches.

Positive Release: The Final Step Before Distribution

One of the most important parts of our quality system is something called positive release.

Positive release means a batch cannot be released until all required quality checks, production records, and testing results have been reviewed and approved.

Before a batch can be dispatched, our teams review:

  • Quality records
  • Production records
  • Laboratory testing results
  • Manufacturing documentation

Only after these reviews are completed and approved can a batch be dispatched.

This final review process helps ensure all required checks have been completed before formula reaches families.

More Transparency for Parents

We know parents want more visibility into how their baby’s formula is made.

And we believe they deserve it.

That’s why we’ve built a Transparency Tracker to give parents a closer look at the testing, checks, audits, and standards behind their specific can of Kendamil.

Our goal is to make it easier for parents to access the information they’re looking for, directly linked to the can they’re feeding their baby.

From quality checks and testing standards to audits and manufacturing information, we’re working to make transparency more accessible than ever.

The Bottom Line

At Kendamil, quality and safety aren’t checked at the end of the process.

They’re built into every stage of it.

From supplier requirements and ingredient testing to environmental monitoring, microbiological screening, heavy metals testing, and positive release procedures, multiple layers of quality assurance help support every batch we produce.

We know parents have questions about how infant formula is made, tested, and monitored.

We believe they deserve clear answers.

That’s why we’re committed to maintaining high standards, sharing more about our quality and safety program, and making information easier to access through initiatives like our upcoming Transparency Tracker.

Because when it comes to your baby’s formula, transparency shouldn’t stop at the label.
